Introduction

An umbrella body built by trekking operators, for trekking operators

Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN) is an umbrella association of trekking agencies in the country. It was established in 1979 by a handful of trekking agency operators who felt it was time to devise sound business principles as well as regulate the sector, which was growing by leaps and bounds with every passing year.

TAAN today brings together around 2,400 general members, 8 associate members and 155 general members of TAAN's regional associations under one roof. The association is run by an elected executive committee working through 22 departments, and remains a non-political, non-profit body dedicated to the sustainable growth of trekking tourism.

  • Trail exploration. New and existing trekking trails are surveyed and maintained to spread demand beyond the busiest routes.
  • Training. Professional training programmes for guides, cooks and tourism entrepreneurs raise the standard of service industry-wide.
  • Promotion. TAAN represents Nepal's trekking industry at conferences and promotional events at home and abroad.
  • Environment & relief. Afforestation and conservation work sit alongside a standing disaster relief and emergency response effort.
